Good Ideas

None of the following are related, but all are good ideas.

Sorry for the blurry picture.  This was the best I could find.

Someone (namely Martha) finally had the good sense to make a vertical file folder which fits inside a magazine file.  I actually googled "vertical file folder" last year thinking it would be perfect for this application, but wasn't able to find any.  So yay!  A pretty way to organize files.  (No filing cabinet needed!)

I finally decided to try this homemade soap scum cleaner after seeing it crop up over and over on Pinterest.  It's made from equal parts blue Dawn and hot vinegar and it works.  Really well, actually.  The recipe calls for 1 cup hot vinegar (heat in glass measuring cup in micro) and 1 cup blue Dawn.  Mix together in spray bottle, and spray in the shower/tub.  It makes for a super thick stick-to-the-wall cleaner.  I left it for an hour, then wiped it down and rinsed.  ALL of the soap scum was gone.  Stinky but effective.  When I make it again, I'll make it 1/3 cup at a time.  That would be plenty.

My neighborhood flower shop is open air.  (Makes me happy just to walk by.)  I thought this was a clever way to elevate the small table filled with potted succulents.

I love having a small lamp on the kitchen counter.   (No, I still haven't painted the underside of my cabinets and yes, my poppies are still blooming.  I always get two at at time.)

This one is actually an old oil lamp which my aunt took to a lighting shop to have wired for electricity.  They even managed to keep the original brass parts intact so that the wick lengthen-er is now the switch.  The shade is from Ikea.  Oil lamps are a dime a dozen at antique stores.   What an unique, inexpensive way to make a small lamp.

  1. your counters look so beautiful. I've been looking for a little lamp for my counter for quite a while now, and I LOVE yours. I don't think my aunt will be finding an old oil lamp for me and having it turned into a electric lamp though :(

    as usual beautiful photos.

  3. Brittany and I just planted cuttings from my succulent pot which is getting very overgrown. Love the raised table idea. If the winds here were not so horrible, I would use it on the patio with an old coffee table which are so easily found at garage sales.

  6. These are all great ideas Camille!! Wow, I could have used you last weekend when I decided to tackle the soap scum in the shower:) Did you actually have to use the cleaner while the vinegar was warm or does it store?

  10. There are tons of these converted oil lamps in all the antique shops at the shore in NJ - let me know if you want more this summer. And I love the galvanized buckets as table leg extenders!

  11. I wish I could take credit for this lamp but I think the Stewarts had it done--I just had the blue one re-wired.

I may have to make a stop at Staples today!

  12. That little lamp pairs sweetly with your glass poppy-filled vases. I really like the mirror above the backsplash also--very classy. Random posts are always fun to read.
