It is ever so popular to paint over wood with a fresh color like white, or turquoise, or yellow.
Or to paint the wood a nice a soothing grey or a contrast-y black.
And while all of these applications have their place and can make a huge transformation, sometimes it's too much of a good thing if every piece of wood in a room is painted. For my taste anyway. (Feel free to disagree, it's what makes decorating interesting!)
When I look at each of these images and imagine the wood painted in any color, it just wouldn't (woodn't?) look as great.
Totally agree with you Camille! I am loving stained wood with white walls.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Camille. I think when you have a really interesting or beautiful wood piece, it's important to keep your walls light to really showcase it. I'm trying to decide whether to paint our kitchen table and think I'll wait until I repaint our kitchen walls (a nice light neutral) to see if I'd rather keep it wood and just refinish it. Thanks for the inspiration!

There's a whole lot of images here to love. You certainly know how to pick them! I've stolen a few.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! I agree that painted wood is not always the best choice for every piece.
ReplyDeleteI know right?!? Wood is all good! You can't deny the richness and texture and warmth of good old fashion wood. I only paint over stuff that can't be restored otherwise...great post Camille!
ReplyDeleteI agree Camille. Some of these pieces are so beautiful and just need to be showcased the way they are!! I think there is a level of sophistication associated with highlighting the beauty of natural wood! Great post!
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to mention. Have you seen the brooklyn brownstone featured in this month's MS Living? Talk about wood - it's great. I think you would like it too!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree- so rich looking. Those images are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think of wood as a natural element in a room. It warms up a space much better than paint and gets better with time, kind of like leather.
ReplyDeleteWhat synchronicity.. I just downloaded that top photo, plus a couple of the others earlier this week...I like your style! That kitchen third down is fantastic..with that window? perfection. : )
ReplyDeleteAll very clean and bright. The natural light from the outside brings a lighter mode. With its beautiful chandelier hanging as well that also adds elegance in the room as well.
ReplyDeleteThat last kitchen has to be one of my favourites! Love the rustic cabinets with campaign latches!
ReplyDeleteFinally someone who loves wood as much as I do!!! Love em images. A good piece of wooden furniture in the right setting gets me every time x
ReplyDeleteWell said, Camille. While some wood look fabulous painted, some are best left unpainted, especially like those you have shown in your images!

I so agree, Camille. I few bloggers and I were talking about this very topic recently. We were saying that perhaps the painted furniture trend is beginning to reach it's point of saturation in the design world. Not sure about that, but can you imagine in another 5 years, looking back at all of your painted furniture and thinking, oh my gosh, why did I paint it all? I think that may actual happen...
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

I'm so in love with the bathroom with the white marble. How heavenly is that!
ReplyDeletehope all is well!! :)
This post is a great reminder that not every vintage piece needs to be "fixed" with paint. I need to be reminded of this more often!
ReplyDeleteI agree entirely. I used to paint everything, now I wait and see whether it would look better as it is. Generally I only paint it if it's a particularly nasty shade of brown.

P.S. An op shop is an Opportunity Shop. The one I go to is run by the Salvation Army. You call them thrift or goodwill shops I think.

Agreed! Love the rich (and even light, greyed out) wood tones against lots of white!
